Time and Tech

Throughout its storied history, Timex has had a vested interest in digital technology. Starting in the early 1970’s, Timex developed digital watches as this technology began to outpace the traditional mechanical movement timepieces.

While no one was predicting the end of mechanical watches, Timex saw room to develop both quartz analog and digital watches and would find great success with the release of the TIMEX® IRONMAN® Triathlon® watch that was named for the triathlon held annually in Kona, Hawaii. Within a year of its 1986 release, it was the best-selling watch in America. The watch also allowed Timex to target its products to different market segments based on lifestyle and interests, a practice that would become increasingly important in the evolution of digital watches.

As Timex tinkered with its IRONMAN collection in 2017, it developed new versions including the IRONMAN® Essential and the IRONMAN® Sleek™, a new style of digital watches was on the horizon. Unlike previous watches that were heavy on tech but lacking in style, Timex created fashion-active digital watches that gave the wearer a durable watch that also supported an individual’s fashion aesthetic.

Two styles launched in 2018 that typify how Timex engineered its digital collection to meet the needs of different consumers are the IRONMAN® Transit and the Timex Command™ Shock.

With the release of the IRONMAN® Transit, Timex produced a stylish crossover watch that could be worn for many occasions. While the Transit still has plenty of features including countdown timer, sports stopwatch with 10-lap memory and water resistance up to 100 meters, the design creates a modern-retro look that can be worn in the weight room as well as the boardroom.

The Timex Command™ Shock watch is proof of Timex’s legendary durability. Built to keep up with active outdoor lifestyles, it is shock resistant with three time zone settings, 100-hour chronograph with lap and split times and a hydration alarm that gives users all the features they need for adventures. Adding to the tactical look, the Timex Command Shock comes in a variety of camouflage colors including olive green, gray and blue with matching straps.

From the Timex Archive

With over 160 years’ experience crafting innovative and quality timepieces, Timex has amassed quite a collection of styles in its archive. From its humble beginnings in the town of Waterbury, Connecticut, Timex started with a group of artisans and craftsmen who created what would ultimately become synonymous with time itself and propel timekeeping from the mantelpiece to the pocket, and on to the wrist.

timex archive

Rather than let classic and timeless watch styles fade into history, Timex launched the Timex Archive Project in 2016 to celebrate and honor those pioneering craftsmen. Inspired by our heritage, the Timex Archive capsule collection presents a new generation of timeless watches for a new generation of pioneers.

timex archive

This year in June, at the Pitti Uomo trade show in Florence, Timex introduced two new styles, the F3 Acadia and the IQ+ Move smartwatch. The F3 Acadia project is the ultimate evolution of the iconic Acadia field watch, created by Timex in the 90’s. Based on the F3 system (three feature system: lightweight, highly visible, and tough) the Acadia became the essential standard utility watch for daily duty in the field. In the new collection, cases are updated with colored lenses including purple, amber, blue and grey fume.

The IQ+™ Move smartwatch allows the wearer to track activity and sleep, create fitness goals, set alarms and control the hands of the watch with their phone.

Together with the F3 Acadia project, the Timex Archive Project features three collections:

timex archive

The Pioneers Collection presents military-inspired models combined with complex straps, some of them subject to exclusive stone washing treatments that replicate the aesthetics of vintage American field garments.

The Offspring Collection is a reinterpretation of the authentic collegiate style. Watches with a simple, classic taste brought alongside with straps that recall the colors, fabrics and design of College Club uniforms and ties from the 50’s and 60’s.

The Metropolis is an experimental collection with urban and contemporary inspiration. Most of the models are characterized by antiqued metal cases together with smoked color lenses, finding inspiration in both vintage style, military sunglasses and in cockpit instrumentation of today’s supersonic jets.

timex archive

Exclusive to the Archive collections is the original turntable that enables customers to create their own watch with the possibility of mixing eight cases with as many straps with different styles, materials and finishing.

The straps by Timex Archive, are made with exclusive fabrics, express the competent know-how and the profound research that Timex does to offer something unique in the landscape of fashion accessories.

Inspired by Classics

Whether it’s surfing the waves in Indonesia and Mexico, shooting for brands such as Bacardi and Calvin Klein, or just filling his Instagram feed with stunning scenery from his travels, photographer Adam Bartoshesky has one rule: Keep it simple.

Growing up near Ocean City, Maryland, he followed his father and brother into the water. He quickly fell in love with surfing and would join them for surfing trips around the world, instilling in him a passion for adventure. After receiving his degree in marketing, he took a month off to travel before settling down in Los Angeles and beginning an Instagram feed that now boasts over 300,000 followers.

timex fairfield watch

“I started shooting surfing and scenery because that’s what I enjoy,” he says. “But then I began shooting people – my girlfriend specifically – and companies started re-posting. Then it turned into paid gigs and my hobby became a career.”

When Timex reached out to see if he would be interested in doing a campaign, his response was immediate.

“Timex is a very iconic brand,” he says. “I’m a big fan of the watches and, when the idea was mentioned, I thought it was awesome.”

timex waterbury watch

While he often wears watches designed for surfing, the Timex campaign allowed him to indulge in classic menswear looks, including the Fairfield Sub-Second and Waterbury Traditional Sub-Second.

“I’m inspired by a lot of classic styles,” he says. “I like the 1950’s/1960’s cool guy style. I do like some off-the-wall pattern shirts, but mostly I like to keep it simple and go with black and white.”

Though his upbringing was certainly adventurous, it wasn’t a whirlwind of glitz and glam.

timex fairfield watch

“I grew up very simple,” he says. “I was always attracted to things that last, not trends. I think that’s why I relate to Timex so well – we both have that strong affinity for things that are classic and timeless.”

Like many social influencers, he didn’t have a set plan for being a brand ambassador. He simply continued to fill his feed with images he liked and let the followers accumulate.

“For me, social influencer is kind of a weird term,” he says. “But I can’t think of a better way to describe it. If brands want to reach younger generations, then they have to be prominent on social media.”

With wanderlust in his heart and the world as his muse, you’ll likely find Adam traveling and capturing life as he sees it.

“All good things come from your passions,” he says. “You should do something because you love it. And, in time, you get better at it and hopefully, it can turn into a profession.”

Welcome to the Neighborhood

Timex partners with leading UK retailer END. and Japanese streetwear brand Neighborhood to launch a special collaboration limited edition watch. When Timex launched its Archive project, a signature collection celebrating and honoring the many craftsmen who pioneered countless Timex styles, the idea was to borrow from over 160 years of watchmaking and update styles to produce modern timepieces with a nod to the originals. The Timex x END. x Neighborhood collaboration features an exclusive iteration of the Timex Navi series. Inspired by military style and the great outdoors, this was a perfect choice for END. and Neighborhood to get behind.

Inspired by divers, the tri-branded watch comes with a tumbled stainless steel finish, custom dome windshield, and a tri-branded logo on the reverse lid.

The Neighborhood streetwear brand was founded in 1994 and is heavily influenced by motorcycles. It is considered one of the most influential brands in contemporary streetwear with a cult following in the West due to its limited availability through western retailers.

Since opening its doors in 2005, END. has developed both on the high street and online into one of the most influential, forward-thinking niche menswear retailers, offering a contemporary, unique, and world-leading brand mix.

The collaboration project was timed to celebrate the opening of END’s new store in SoHo, London during the second week of October. The limited-edition watch features a stainless-steel case, black dial, gray fabric, double-layer slip-thru strap, and a rotating bezel.

Bringing together the style codes of three transatlantic icons, the Timex x END. x Neighborhood timepiece combines military-inspired details with a biker state of mind. She’s Like a Rainbow

While some see things in black and white, popular lifestyle Instagrammer Rosie Clayton (@rclayton) couldn’t imagine a world without color.

timex weekender

“I’m from Chicago and the winters here are very cold and very grey,” she says. “I needed something to lift my mood and took it as a challenge to use vibrant colors in my work.”

Prior to becoming a social influencer, she had extensive experience in fashion working as a Merchandiser for the corporate offices of J.Crew and Abercrombie & Fitch as well as owning her own clothing store for eight years.

timex weekender

“Having had exposure to various aspects of the retail industry really instilled in me the power of branding and color,” she says. “Color weaves my images together and my goal is to use captivating visual imagery to tell an impactful story.”

As Timex began to incorporate more color into its watch designs and straps, it was only natural to reach out to Rosie and get her onboard for a campaign.

timex weekender

“When I was approached by Timex it started with a general creative brief,” she says. “I was given a lot of freedom to imagine the campaign in my own voice and evoke spring and summer in a way that would connect with my audience.”

She was given a selection of Timex® watches to choose from and took a liking to the Weekender® with a white dial, silver case and blue nylon slip-thru strap.

timex weekender

“I partner with brands that I believe in and my aim is to create content that is timeless and classic, clean and easy to understand. I feel that Timex and I share that same creative approach.”

Whether its clothing or accessories, she pays close attention to the relationship of the object to other elements in the image. Many of her Instagram posts use vibrant backgrounds to set a scene in which she can tell her story.

timex weekender

“Many would see my posts as style features,” she says. “But I look at it as lifestyle art. Walls have played a big role in my work but I actually began by posting vibrant interior spaces, creative flatlays, and travel images. My feed is a celebration of color through art, travel, and design and I hope my work brings joy to those who see it.”

One look at her Instagram feed (currently boasting over 124,000 followers) and the viewer is awash in a sea of vibrant hues reminiscent of rainbows, color bursts and mosaics. Against these backgrounds, she tells whimsical and fanciful stories that are uplifting and hard to forget. Timex could not have found a better fit to explore the relationship of colors for spring and summer stories.

Automatics for the People

During the 1960’s, prior to the revolution of quartz technology, timepieces operated through a mechanical watch movement. Two types of mechanical watches exist: the manual hand-wind and the automatic wind.

timex marlin automatic

Recently Timex launched the critically-acclaimed and commercially-successful hand-wind Marlin and now is following that up with an automatic Marlin. A timely take on the original, the new automatic Marlin maintains the classic look of the hand-wind, but in a 40mm size.

timex marlin automatic

Unlike hand-wind watches that need to be wound each day, an automatic, if worn daily, is automatically wound by the movement of the wearer. This movement will drive the weighed rotor to move, which winds the watch automatically.

The mechanical watch movement is driven by a spring (called a mainspring) which must be wound periodically. The release of the energy held in the mainspring is transmitted through a series of gears to power the balance wheel, a weighted wheel which oscillates back and forth at a constant rate.

timex marlin automatic

Often referred to as being ‘Analog in a Digital World’, automatic watches have a special place among watch enthusiasts who prefer the craftsmanship and artistry when compared to more common quartz watch movement.

Currently, the Marlin automatic is the only automatic watch made by Timex and pairs stainless steel, domed crystal and mechanical movements with the timeless sophistication of a sleek mid-century design. We’ve carefully selected every single detail to create a watch that takes a licking but keeps on ticking.
