Why the Easy Reader Endures

When it comes to watches, they don’t come much simpler than our Easy Reader®. For over 40 years, this basic watch has become synonymous with Timex and continues to be a best-seller.

As the wristwatch shifted from being purely functional to a fashion accessory, dial treatments began to rely on aesthetic values rather than readability. Timex, known for functional and reliable timepieces, went back to the company’s roots to provide a functional, reliable and readable wristwatch.

timex easy reader

Based on dials from the Waterbury Clock Company, Timex produced watches that could be easily read with a glance. The use of large, full Arabic numerals and bold hands, both in high contrast to the dial color provided consumers with a wristwatch that could be read from across a room.

Prior to 1977, the men’s size watches using dial treatments were marketed under the collection name Mercury. The smaller women’s size was sold as the Petite collection. In 1977, Timex applied to trademark the name Easy Reader® and began a national advertising campaign which included both print and television advertisements. The campaign touted Easy Reader as “The NEW watch with the BIG numbers”.

timex easy reader

Originally offered using white dials with black printed numerals and hands, the wrist watches resembled a traditional school clock. To broaden the collection to a full assortment, bold dial colors replaced the traditional white dial and darker colors, such as black and deep blue, utilized high contrast white printed numerals and hands to ensure readability even with a more fashionable look. Easy Reader quickly became the workhorse collection for Timex.

Since its introduction, the Easy Reader watch has seen many evolutions from basic black and white to bold colors, from simple leather straps to the iconic expansion band attachment. It has seen the addition of the INDIGLO® night-light feature, expanding its readability to absolutely any condition with a press of the crown.

A renowned DJ and Head of Marketing and Partnerships for music festivals Outlook and Dimensions, Andy Lemay is regarded as one of the steadfast DJ’s keeping underground electronic music alive.

“I feel that breaking new talent, as well as respecting the originators and those who have been dedicated to the craft for many years, is a responsibility of ours,” he says. “And it is a core value of mine.”

Andy Lemay Timex

The Dimensions Festival is held annually in the ruins of the Croatian Fort, Punta Christo, and gives a platform for DJ’s who otherwise wouldn’t get wide recognition.

“At Dimensions, they don’t book the major stars,” he says. “The team books the artists they feel should be heard and get more recognition.”

A lot has changed since he started DJ’ing, and while he appreciates the way new technology can make performing easier and connect artists, he still feels nostalgia for the early days of turntable technique.

andy lemay timex

He won’t take sides in the ongoing debate of old vs new when it comes to DJ’ing, but he does feel the need to respect where the art form came from and why vinyl should still be a part of any DJ’s collection.

“When you see a DJ show up with a large vinyl collection it shows passion and dedication,” he says. “It costs a lot of money to build a vinyl collection and it’s no easy task lugging that baggage through airports.”

He also welcomes the advancements in technology that give DJ’s less equipment to carry around and thousands of songs on laptops to choose from.

“With the internet, you have both good and bad,” he says. “On the one hand, it’s easier to rip off other artists but the ability to find new artists and share music is so wide open it makes for a really exciting time.”

In addition to helping DJ’s be found, he also finds social platforms and sites like SoundCloud great for connecting what used to be a very insular community.

andy lemay timex

“Before, underground electronic music was maybe centered around local scenes,” he says. “Now, you can find like-minded people all over the world and connect this eco-system of people who share the same passion for music. It’s really fun to break out of a closed scene and discover what DJ’s are creating in South Africa, Finland, Mexico, Columbia, everywhere really. You can find incredible DJ’s in the most unlikely of places.”

The Ride of His Life

robert barranco timex allied lt

Robert Barranco, a competitive BMX rider from Florida, doesn’t take life too seriously. With his bike, a backpack and a plane ticket, the 23-year old makes urban exploration a physical journey across the world that follows a personal inner trail.

“I like to live life without a plan,” he says. “My mindset is ‘we’ll figure it out when we get there’. If you don’t have a plan, then nothing can go wrong.”

While he likes to joke that he rides BMX as an excuse to go on trips, he has been a competitive rider since 2014. His first love was motocross but his parents thought it was too dangerous so he settled on pedaling his way through life.

“I like to ride without obligations,” he says. “When the basic needs are taken care of, you can do whatever you want. You just have to find a way.”

Though he is an unsponsored BMX rider, he has visited over 100 skate parks around the world with one of his favorites being Victoria Skate Park in London. To enable his travels, he limits himself to $10 a day, sleeps in cars, stranger’s homes and tents.

“Do whatever you want,” he says, “because one day, that’s all that’s going to matter.”

With the help of a friend he has created a clothing company called FTE Collective, or For the Experience. The online store features a variety of skatewear apparel including t-shirts, patches, wool socks and hats. As with most of his endeavors, Barranco never intended FTE to become a brand.

“It all started when some friends and I would go to restaurants and not even eat to save money,” he says. “We just went to hang out with people we knew who were eating and say ‘I’ll just go for the experience’ It’s a simple phrase that encompasses and explains so many people’s way of thinking and lifestyle in just three little words.”

FTE Collective doesn’t support a living, even one as cheap as his, but it does help achieve simple goals.

“Sometimes I’ll work a few months at a time doing whatever and then disappear,” he says. I’ll find cool skate parks to ride and places to hike with friends. When you’re older you’re not going to look back and remember paying rent and making car payments. You will remember that time you slept outside in a park in France.”

He does admit to occasionally thinking if he will one day settle down, own a home and have a family. For now, though, time is on his side.

“I read somewhere once ‘You’re born and you die. What you do in between is up to you’”, he says. “Right now, all I want to do is ride my bike with friends and travel the world.”

Timex and Todd Snyder Release the Mid-Century Day/Date Watch

Timex xTodd Snyder and Timex collaborate again, this time producing the vintage-inspired Mid-Century Day/Date watch. A relationship that has seen many successful launches including the Peanuts collection, the Mod and the Blackjack, Timex and Todd Snyder continue to embody classic Americana along with a contemporary approach to quality workmanship.

Introduced at Todd Snyder’s show during New York’s Fashion Week Men’s on Monday, February 4th, the Mid-Century timepiece gets another step closer to Todd’s quest for a watch that will typify men’s style.

Timex x Todd Snyder Mid Century Day Date

“I’m always in search for the ultimate gentlemen’s watch,” Todd says. “The Mid-Century is inspired by a vintage 70’s look that can be worn with formal or casual attire. It looks just as good with a suit as it does with a plain white t-shirt and a pair of blue jeans.”

While he often draws new project ideas by digging through the extensive archive of Timex watches, this idea came from a chance encounter.

“I was traveling in Europe and had a meeting with someone from the Timex team, and he was wearing the coolest old Timex with a day/date feature,” he says. “I liked it so much I took it right off his wrist and used it as the starting point for the Mid-Century. This watch is definitely one of my personal favorites.”

timex x todd snyder mid century day date

Unlike other Timex X Todd Snyder watches, the Mid-Century is not a re-issue but a new watch based on an original.

“From concept to finish, the process for this watch took almost two years,” he says. “It’s a new case and a new dial. Also, including the day/date element added a level of complexity to the process.”

The Todd Snyder + Timex Mid-Century timepiece is packed with vintage-inspired character and functional features. While the original was an automatic with chrome plated bezel, the new version is upgraded with a stainless-steel case and day/date quartz movement for improved accuracy. It’s styled with a handsome leather strap from S.B. Foot Tanning Co. and detailed with distinctive contrast stitching. The Mid-Century is crafted with the same domed acrylic crystal as the original, for an iconic timepiece that evokes the past while meeting today’s exacting standards.

todd snyder mid century day date

“With this watch, I wanted to capture that mid-century aesthetic”, he says. “I wanted a simple and clean look that would appeal to men of all ages and carry an air of elegance and sophistication.”

Available exclusively at the Todd Snyder flagship store on Madison Square Park in New York and on Toddsnyder.com, the Mid-Century Day/Date is the next step in a fruitful relationship between fashion design and watchmaking ingenuity.

“I look at my work with Timex as a fun journey,” he says. “Timex has been a part of my life since I can remember and now I want to help introduce this important brand to a new generation.”

Strap-o-logy

timex strapsIf there’s one thing consumers want today it is options. The generation known as Millennials have made it clear that variety and customization are very important in their decision making. At Timex, we take great pride in our watchmaking expertise as well as our ability to offer consumers choices when it comes to watch straps. Our strap shop allows you to refresh your watch look with endless possibilities.

When shopping for replacement straps, there are several factors to keep in mind: the type of strap, the material and the size.

timex straps

Quick-release straps feature our traditional two-piece straps with a simple, quick-release spring bar that allows you to change your strap without any tools. For a dramatic change to the look of your favorite watch, stainless steel in either bracelet or mesh band is a great choice. Another option for a strap material is silicone and resin. Soft and comfortable, these straps are made to resist the elements and provide the wearer with a comfortable strap that is ideal for outdoor and sport activities.

The last thing you need to do is determine the size of strap you need. This is easily done by measuring the distance in millimeters between the lugs on your watch case.

The Timex strap stop also has a replacement strap program that helps you find replacement straps for popular Timex styles including Expedition® and IRONMAN®. And if you need assistance, simply use the Shop the Strap Finder for a step-by-step guide that will match you up with the perfect watch strap.

Diver-Inspired Watches

tSome watch styles come and go, others stand the test of time and water. Diver-inspired watches are one of those styles that never went away. Sleek, sporty and hinting at adventure, the diver-inspired watch has been a staple of men’s outfits for years and that look is still going strong.

The appeal of diver-inspired watches is that they are much more affordable than true diver watches which can often cost thousands of dollars. True diver watches also must meet strict guidelines set out by the International Organization for Standardization. For those who like the look of a diver watch without the high cost and stringent standards, a diver-inspired watch is your best bet.

Timex offers several diver-inspired watches that exude a nautical feel while also looking great in occasional settings. Sticking with the diver watch style playbook, these timepieces feature bold hands, large hour markers and a top-ring. The result is a classic look that works on land and at sea.

timex harborside

Available with either leather strap or stainless steel bracelet, the Harborside was inspired by coastal living. The stainless-steel model features date window, 42mm silver-tone case with a blue dial and two-tone stainless-steel bracelet to elevate your style with a masculine and sophisticated look. Choose the tan leather strap model to add a more casual look.

timex allied coastline

Inspired by adventure on land and sea, the Allied® Coastline is a well-crafted timepiece that shows elapsed time on the turning top-ring and is water resistant to 100 meters. The polyurethane and soft silicone strap is resilient and comfortable and the dial features a date window.

timex navi ocean

Another diver-inspired style, the Navi Ocean, comes from the Timex Archive Project that combines historical know-how with a refined design aesthetic. This watch offers a nod to classic diver-style with an updated design and blue or brown strap colors.

Watch Face Design

The details
Several elements distinguish one watch face design from another, including case shape, dial markings, hands, lenses, metals and more. Common case shapes include round, rectangle, square, oval, carre and tonneau, although a watch face designer may also experiment with asymmetrical shapes. Analog watches can feature various dial markings, including Arabic or Roman numerals and sticks or dots to indicate where the numbers on a traditional clock would be. Some watch face designs employ a combination of dial markings, such as using numerals for 12, 3, 6 and 9, and noting the numbers in between with a line.

The colors of these details and the face itself vary by watch, and some have smoked or tinted lenses that encase the timepiece. Many Timex® watch faces also feature INDIGLO® light-up dials for glow-in-the-dark visibility in dim conditions.

timex fairfield supernova

The trends
As with any fashion accessory, watch face designs see rises in new trends. Modern designs tend to err on the side of simplicity and minimalism, although experimenting with different colors is a way for watchmakers to appeal to different preferences. Currently, we’ve seen many watch wearers fall in love with marble face designs, which are neutral enough to be worn every day but also offer an air of intrigue and personality.

The Timex repertoire
At Timex, we offer everything from digital watch faces to the vintage-inspired markings of the Marlin® watch. Here are more of our fan favorites:

timex fairfield chronograph

The modern Fairfield
The Fairfield collection honors sleek watch face design, featuring solid neutral background colors and line dial markings in place of numerals. The darker color combinations have an especially striking look, while the lighter faces with simplistic details are the epitome of a modern everyday watch. The simplicity means Fairfield watches work well in casual settings but also look the part at more formal events.

timex waterbury chronograph
HyperFocal: 0

The traditional Waterbury
Paying homage to our Connecticut roots, the Waterbury Collection features more traditional watch face designs with classic round cases and numeric dial markings. The ageless design makes these timepieces the perfect addition to any watch collection.

timex crystal opulence

The sparkly Swarovski® Crystals
Our crystal watches range from the simple Fairfield Crystal with Swarovski® crystal details on the strap to the snazzy Opulence, which has a completely crystal watch face. Our Crystal Bloom watches feature floral designs on the watch face, complete with Swarovski® crystal accents. These sparkling timepieces make a bold yet sophisticated statement, taking modern watch face design to a whole new level.

While watch face design gives each collection its own identity, the same level of careful craftsmanship and authentic watchmaking goes into every Timex watch.

How to Change a Watch Battery

The mini panic attack you may experience when you think you’re running late is easily the worst part of a watch battery dying. Your timepiece gets stuck where it is, displaying an inaccurate time until it gets fresh power. Once you realize what’s happened, your next move is to replace the battery as soon as possible.

While some watches have a unique process, you can generally change your Timex watch battery the same way you would most timepieces. Here’s how:

Take it to an expert
If you doubt your ability to change your watch battery, don’t worry. There are plenty of jewelers who would be happy to replace the precious part for you. Prices for this service will vary depending on the jeweler, so you may want to inquire at several stores before committing. However, once you find a jeweler or watch repair professional you can trust, we recommend heading back there whenever you need a reliable fix.

Do it yourself
You’ll need tweezers and a small screwdriver to remove the dead battery and replace it with the new one. Safety note: it is suggested using plastic rather than metal tools to avoid an electrical shock. Wearing gloves can also prevent damage from occurring inside the watch.

Once you have the materials, follow these steps to change your watch battery like a pro:

1. Remove the watch back
Most modern watches have snap-off back panels, which have small indentations to help you carefully pry off the cover. Using a small flathead screwdriver or blade, press down on the indentation and twist until the cover comes loose. If your watch back is secured with screws, use a small screwdriver, such as one designed for eyeglasses, to loosen the screws and remove the cover. Some watch backs have slots large enough to fit the edge of a coin, which you can use to twist off the cover.

2. Place the gasket to the side
If you see a rubber ring or plastic covering, remove that from the watch case to reveal the inner workings of the timepiece. Use tweezers or the edge of a knife if you need help getting a strong grip. Battery Depot recommended cleaning the gasket before you put it back after changing the battery.

3. Find and remove the battery
Once you see the existing battery, note which side is facing upward so you can replicate the placement when you insert the new part. If there are plastic clips holding the battery in place, use plastic tweezers to lift them. From there, you can use the tweezers to ease the battery out of the watch case.

4. Insert the new battery
Use the tweezers to place the new battery in its designated slot, and gently press down to secure its position.

5. Test your work
Before reattaching the back cover, carefully flip the watch over to see if it’s working. If the hands still aren’t moving, double check to make sure you installed the new battery correctly. You may have a damaged battery or faulty watch if it still fails to work, so consider taking the timepiece to a jeweler or watch repair store for a professional examination.

6. Replace the gasket and watch back
If the battery’s working, perform the first two steps in reverse order to put all the parts back in place.

With a fresh battery, your watch will be ready to wear once again. Better still, now that you know how to replace the batteries, you can confidently add more watches to your repertoire. Check out the Timex collection to find your next timekeeping companion.

Some digital watches can also monitor your heart rate. This feature is especially ideal for runners or those who want to track cardio-heavy workouts. You can also store the data and check the history of your pulse scores to compare results.

Plus, with digital time and data display, digital watches can be easier to read than analog watches while in motion. This display allows you to steal a quick glance at the time or your heart rate when you’re on the move while the high-tech features record your progress as you go. Light-up watch dials mean this easy reading continues even when the sun goes down.

3. Cross the finish line
Coupled with the ability to track physical activity, lightweight construction and easy-on-the-wrist materials digital watches are the perfect companions for any sport.
